Brushing
Be sure to brush your teeth right after every meal and before you go to bed, spending at least 2 minutes each time.
Use a brush with a small brush head to more easily navigate around your braces.
On the day braces are placed on your teeth, you will receive detailed instructions on the best method to brush your teeth.  A tool kit of additional oral hygiene aids will be provided at that time as well.
At least once a day, use the proxabrush (Christmas tree brush) which we provide you, to get between each pair of teeth behind the arch wire by using up and down strokes.
A Waterpik or a quality electric toothbrush with a small head (such as Sonicare) is an additional hygiene aid you may wish to consider.

Flossing
Because your toothbrush wont reach between your teeth, brushing alone won’t keep your teeth clean and healthy.  Floss once a day using a floss threader, available from us or a pharmacy, to get the floss behind and under your arch wire.  Additional aids to simplify flossing with braces can be found at your local pharmacy: Oral B superfloss, Platypus ortho flosser (from PlatypusCo.com) or the floss fish (FlossFish.com).

Fluoride
Use a fluoride rinse, such as Phos-Flur or ACT, after brushing at night.  Listerine is also appropriate if the bottle specifically indicates fluoride is present in the formula (Total Care, Smart Rinse).

totpasteRemember
You should be brushing at least three times a day-after breakfast, after
lunch or after school, and before you go to bed.  If you are not able to brush
after you eat, be sure to rinse thoroughly with water and NEVER skip brushing
at night before you go to bed.
